Борис Гельфанд - один из ярчайших представителей современных шахмат, которые начали свой отсчет с Каспарова (некоторые полагают, что с Фишера). Одержав победу на чемпионате СССР среди юношей 1985 года Борис стал считаться одной из самых больших надежд крупнейшей шахматной державы. Затем, последовали успешные выступления в различных международных молодежных соревнованиях (на счету Гельфанда победа в первенстве Европы 1987-88 и дележ первого места на чемпионате мира 1988). Его переход во взрослые шахматы прошел на удивление гладко. Уже на полуфиналах первенства СССР он произвел сильное впечатление не только высокими результатами, но и стилем игры.
Как заметил один из участников отбора в Клайпеде (1988): “вроде и на доску не смотрит, а все куда-то по сторонам, или вовсе гуляет, а подходит и делает сильнейший ход”. Кстати такая манера игры вообще свойственна многим сильным гроссмейстерам. Вспомнить хотя бы Иванчука и Свидлера. Со времен успешного выступления в Линаресе 1990 Гельфанд прочно вошел в мировую элиту. За истекшие десять были и претендентские матчи, и победы в крупных турнирах. Несмотря на то, что иногда рейтинг Бориса испытывал колебания (что приводило к потере приглашений в лучшие круговые турниры), в сознании истинных любителей шахмат он был и остается гроссмейстером экстра-класса.
В чем сила Гельфанда? Чтобы быть шахматистом высочайшего класса надо уметь в шахматах все, а что-то особенно здорово. На мой взгляд, сильнейшей стороной Бориса является дебют. В этом смысле он продолжатель классической традиции Ботвинника, Геллера и Каспарова. В наш компьютерный век, казалось бы, чего проще - запусти машину в интересующей позиции и иди спать. Вероятно, так поступают многие, а продемонстрировать глубокую, фундаментальную дебютную подготовку удается лишь единицам. Шахматистов, способных генерировать качественные дебютные идеи в современных шахматах очень немного. Борис, безусловно, принадлежит к их числу. Имея на руках такой “неубиенный” козырь, шахматист высокого класса просто не может долго оставаться в тени. После относительного спада Гельфанд вновь на подъеме. Его игра в последних турнирах, яркое тому свидетельство. Хочется надеяться, что главные успехи у Бориса все еще впереди.
В декабре 2009 г. стал чемпионом мира в нокаут-системе, в г. Ханты-Мансийске.

Boris Gelfand - one of brightest representatives of modern chess which have reckoned from Kasparov (some believe, that from Fisher). Having won in the championship of the USSR among young men of 1985 Boris began to be considered as one of the greatest hopes of the largest chess power. Then, successful performances in various international youth competitions (on Gelfand's account a victory in superiority of Europe 1987-88 and a sharing of the first place in the World championship 1988) have followed. Its transition in adult chess has passed marvellously smoothly. Already on semi-finals of superiority of the USSR it has made strong impression not only high results, but also style of game.
As one of participants of selection in Klaipeda (1988) has noticed: “like and at a board does not look, and all somewhere on the parties, or at all walks, and approaches and does the strongest course”. By the way such manner of game in general is peculiar to many strong grand masters. To recollect at least Ivanchuk and Svidler. Since times of successful performance in Linares 1990 Gelfand has strongly entered into world elite. For expired ten were both champion matches, and victories in large tournaments. In spite of the fact that sometimes Boris's rating tested fluctuations (that led to loss of invitations in the best circular tournaments), in consciousness of true fans of chess it was and remains the grand master of an extra-class.
In what Gelfand's force? To be the chess player of the highest class it is necessary to be able in chess everything, and something is especially healthy. In my opinion, Boris's the strongest party is the debut. In this sense it the continuer of classical tradition Botvinnik, Geller and Kasparov. In our computer century, apparently, than that is easier - start the car in an interesting position and go to sleep. It is probable, so many arrive, and to show deep, fundamental debut preparation it is possible only to units. The chess players, capable to generate qualitative debut ideas in modern chess it is a little. Boris, certainly, belongs to their number. Having on hands such a trump, the chess player of a high class it is simple cannot long remain in a shade. After relative recession Gelfand again on lifting. Its game in last tournaments, bright to volume the certificate. It would be desirable to hope, that the main successes at Boris still ahead.
In December, 2009 became the world champion in knockout-system, in Khanty-Mansiysk.
